Abstract

Purpose: The study was done to identify factors influencing volunteer nursing student attitudes toward elderly people.

Methods: Data were collected from May 21 to June 16, 2012 using a questionnaire which included Facts on Aging Quiz and Aging Semantic Differential Scaling. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 20.0.

Results: The mean score for the nursing students¡¯ knowledge of elders was 12.4¡¾2.5 out of a possible 25 and the mean for attitudes toward elders was 84.2¡¾9.1 with a possible range of 20~140. The nursing students¡¯ attitudes toward elders showed significant negativeness as compared to attitudes toward others as receivers of voluntary activities (p=.026). Factors significantly influencing nursing students¡¯ attitudes toward elders were ¡¯knowledge about elders¡¯, ¡¯religion¡¯, and ¡¯satisfaction with voluntary work¡¯ which explained 13.7% of the variance (p<.001).

Conclusion: The study results indicate that interventions to improve nursing students¡¯ knowledge about elders and increase their satisfaction in voluntary activities with elders are necessary in order to cultivate positive attitudes toward elders through voluntary work.
